Reyers was founded in 1886 by a German immigrant shoemaker, John A. Reyer. Six decades later, John's son Carl sold the small, 1200-square-foot family shoe store to Harry Jubelirer, himself a second generation shoeman from Pittsburgh. Harry moved his small family 60 miles north to Sharon, a tiny steel town on the Pennsylvania/Ohio border. At the time, there were six other shoe stores in the downtown area.
By way of lots of hard work, force of personality and an intimate knowledge of the shoe industry, Harry grew the business steadily, overcoming all the competition in town. In the 1970's, Harry's sons Mark and Steven came into the business. Each night at dinner, the conversation inevitably turned to the business and how to keep it growing. Reyers started advertising on television in the Youngstown market, 20 minutes away by car. Soon, Reyers was able to bill itself as the largest shoe store between New York and Chicago.
In 1986, Reyers moved across town to its present location in the City Centre Plaza, where a 36,000-square-foot supermarket used to be. Because of its vast size, Reyers was able to offer selections from over 300 famous designer and name brands. Reyers carries over 150,000 pairs of shoes in stock, in every size, style and color imaginable. Reyers now employs over 200 persons and offers full service all the time.
Reyers advertises on television in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Erie now. We use radio, newspaper, sale flyers and interstate billboards. It may be hard to believe, but hundreds of buses come to downtown Sharon from places as far away as Toronto, every year, to shop for shoes at Reyers. They also shop for clothes at the Winner (the world's largest off-price fashion store for women), or for chocolate at Daffin's (the world's largest candy store). They finish the day at the Quaker Steak restaurant, where they serve the best chicken wings in the U.S.A.
Harry retired in 1997; his sons, Mark and Steven, now carry on the tradition of "Reyers, the World's Largest Shoe Store."
